Wednesday 19 August- moving on to Udaipur

Lazy morning- didn't do much- chased up accommodation for Udaipur.

Got a private bus to Udaipur which took 7 1/2 hours! It left at the expected time, and dropped us off at the right place... Even the rickshaw driver who picked us was nice and reasonable...

Indian buses are either Government or privately run. The Government run bus we went on was pretty basic. Thee private ones have been much more comfortable, however, you buy the tickets through travel firms, which is where we got scammed before. This time, the guest house in Jodphur arranged the tickets for us & even organised a rickshaw to take us to the bus stand. We had to pay commission but you have to pay that for any kind of service which anyone does for you.. The Government buses stop at bus stands which are stations, and that is also where you buy the tickets as well (no commission paid to anyone, so people are not keen on you using them). The private buses don't seem to use the same bus stands, and seem to start and stop the journeys anywhere.. Both the Government and private buses randomly pick passengers up as they go along the journey. Which seems to work quite well for the local people. The private buses have a mixture of seating & 'sleeper' compartments. These are small cubicles, with no seats, wheere families can all sit together and sleep or just spend the journey. I would imagine that these are quite cheap to have for a family trip. In terms of getting around towns, there doesn't seem to be the local buses which we have at home, or they are pretty linited. The buses are really cheap, compared to the trains.

Udaipur is built around a lake and is quite a large town. On the way through, there seems to be plenty of western shops (Levi's etc) which would indicate that it is fairly affluent. We had heard that the lake was really low due to the poor monsoon.

Also, parts of Octopussy were filmed there years ago.

Our hotel is amazing & we have a lovely balconey, with a view over the lake! Hurrah.... Not bad for 500 rupees a night (about 7.50pounds)..
