It is 7pm in India now. Punama is cooking our tea at the moment. She is employed by the charity and prepares our lunch & dinner. She also cleans a bit and does some tidying up.
The food is ok- no sin of tummy problems yet. There is a water filter as well, so that is safe.
We have just been out to some local shops & bought some beer for this evening. It is starting get dark & is a lot more pleasant to walk around in, temparature wise. We have also seen our local Hindu temple.
Today has been 'orientation day'. We have both been taken out to the places where we shall be working. Claire's 'school' is very basic- just 2 rooms & very little equipment. My project is in a small village just outside of Jaipur- called Nindi.
Claire seems to have quite a structured time with the children- a mixture of ABC's, maths and games. Mine seems to be less structured. It will teaching the women some computer skills, and also basic English, such as nouns for common items. Claire has been doing some prep for tomorrow. I really don't know what to expect with my project. None of the other volunteers are doing my project so they don't know very much about it either.
When we visited this morning there was about 10 women at the project, a couple of them with their kids. They all looked quite young but a couple in particular looked under 16.
We also went to a small mall so that I could get stocked up on some stuff. I now have some clean undies & a toothbrush & Claire has bought some batteries for her camera.
We also had a bit more of a discussion about India with Anita, the woman from the charity. It is not uncommon for girls to be married very young (10/11 years!- although they don't live with their husbands at that age). It is against the law but it does still go on in this part of the country. I am surprised- I thought that girls would be married young but not that young!
Last night the upstairs neighbour took us to a bowling alley place where we bowled & played pool. Yes, us 3 volunteers women were the only females in there... No alcohol sold either.
No news about my bag. There has not been an Aeroflot flight today. There is a flight tomorrow, which lands early on Wednesday morning. Hopefully there will be some news then. I miss my shoes!
We are planning to go to the Old City tomorrow- that is the bit which is pink.. I have borrowed a map from Ron, one of the other volunteers. So we will work in the morning, and go out late afternoon- when it is hopefully a bit cooler. We know where we can get an auto-rickshaw. Claire is practising her numbers so she is better at haggling.....
